Jennifer, Hospital Manager

Jennifer joined ANRVA in 2014, when she and her family moved to the High Country from the Northeast. She holds an A.A.S. in Massage Therapy and is currently working to complete a B.S. in Business Management. Jenn has felt a deep connection with animals from a very young age and has jumped at every opportunity to support their well-being. As Hospital Manager, she is honored to serve in a role that supports the Human-Animal Bond, extending her passion for wellness care to our veterinary team and client family as well. Outside of work, Jenn enjoys spending time with her husband and their two daughters. They share their home with a grumpy English Bulldog (Sir Tater Tot), a sassy kitty (Crowley), and a finicky bearded dragon (Urie). In addition to her love of animals, Jenn enjoys martials arts, singing, dancing, theatre, hiking, spending time with family & friends, and learning all sorts of new things!

Nicole, Team Lead – Client Service Coordinator

Nicole started at ANRVA in 2017. She has been working in the veterinary field since she was 16 years old. Nicole attended Appalachian State University for Biology Secondary Education. However, she realized that her passion will always be in veterinary medicine. Nicole is here because she cares so deeply for the pets that add such beauty to our lives; she is honored to play a role in their care. Her fur family includes a sassy little dog named “Coconut” and an amazing cat with no feet named “Forrest”! Nicole’s hobbies include embroidery, painting, swimming in lakes during the summer, and binge watching “Criminal Minds”.

Barbara, Client Service Specialist

Barbara began working at the front desk as a Client Service Specialist in 2013. Barbara graduated from the University of NC in Greensboro with a major in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education. After retiring from teaching school in Burlington, NC for 23 years, she moved to the High Country to live in the place her father called “God’s Country”. After moving the Boone, Barbara worked as a receptionist for one of the area’s churches. She brought her pets to Dr. Kreis for several years before she decided that she wanted to join this very special veterinary family. Barbara loves working with and helping people – and she adores four-legged furry babies. ANRVA is her happy place! Since she joined the team, Barbara has developed lots of special friendships with many of our clients and their fur babies. Her goal is to make a difference and to help ANRVA to be as positive a place for others as it was for her when she was a client years ago. Barbara’s greatest love is for her two children, Brittany and Michael, and her 3 four-legged babies (Jiggs, Bella, and Dinky). They are all her pride and joy! In her free time, she loves to spend time with her family and friends, travel, listen to music, and read.

Carlee, Client Service Specialist

Carlee joined the ANRVA team in 2016. She has a B.A. in English from Appalachian State University. Carlee loves being the vessel between animals and the people who can provide the care they need. She enjoys knowing that the work she does every day in helping our critters live happy and healthy lives. And she gets to pet dogs every day! Carlee shares her home with a 10 year old Chinchilla named “Lenny” and a four year old cat named “Dax”. Her hobbies include sleeping, reading crafting, Netflix binging, doting on her cat, and cracking better jokes than Dr. McAdams.

Deena, Registered Veterinary Technician – Team Leader

Deena has been a member of the team at ANRVA 3 times! Originally joining the practice in 1995, she took sabbatical to work in Emergency and Specialty practices – and most recently rejoined the team in 2010. She enjoys supporting the innovative approach to care provided at ANRVA. Deena graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. in Animal and Veterinary Science and also earned her A.A.S. in Veterinary Technology from Fairmont State College. She has been a veterinary technician for 35 years, working in private practice, Emergency and Specialty practice, and Veterinary Teaching Hospitals. Deena also has the honor of serving as an instructor for a Veterinary Technician program. At a young age, Deena realized that animals do not judge; they accept you as you are. She wanted to return that loyalty be caring for them. She enjoys seeing the world through animals’ eyes and being the best advocate possible for them. Deena has been married to her husband Mike for 36 years – and still going strong! They share their home with four dogs (Elcee – age 15, Chloe – age 13, Alleigh – age 3, Abbee – age 3), three cats (Sparkie- age 14, TC – age 10, Isaiah – age 3), a chinchilla (Cheech – age 11), and several Koi fish (age 1). When not at work, Deena enjoys hiking, cutting/splitting firewood, and just hanging out in the woods listening/watching wildlife, clouds, and wind in the trees.

Abi, Registered Veterinary Technician

Abi has been part of the team at ANRVA since 2014. She began her career in medicine 13 years ago with a love for animals and a fascination with the medical field. Abi has been privileged to work with some amazing individuals throughout her experience in emergency medicine, neurology, and general practice – and ANRVA is no exception. She is thankful to be a part of a team that puts the well being of our fur patients above all else. Her fur family includes a spunky, always dirty Schnauzer named Bill, a loveable and equally goofy Shepherd mix named Gibbs (after Gibbs free energy, not NCIS), and an orange tabby cat/maybe mountain lion named Ralph. Abi’s free time consists of running, CrossFit, cooking, yoga, kombucha brewing, spending any amount of time near a waterfall, and studying for her career change into (human) Nursing.

Kara, Registered Veterinary Technician

Kara began her journey with us in 2017. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology from Cornell University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology from Medaille College. She is licensed as a Veterinary Technician in North Carolina and New York. Kara works as a technician because she loves working with animals. She also loves the science behind veterinary care and how we can apply it to help out our furry friends. She works at ANRVA because she loves the people and the atmosphere – and especially appreciates that we try to make every experience the best and most positive that we can for pets and their families. Kara shares her life with three fur babies of her own: a cat, a Boston Terrier, and a Husky.

Kaitlin joined the team at ANRVA in 2016. After earning a B.A. from Appalachian State University in Creative Writing with a minor in Linguistics, Kaitlin worked to directly support traumatized teenagers. Working in the veterinary field always had appealed to Kaitlin, so she submitted an application for an open role in the boarding kennel at ANRVA. Since she began with us, Kaitlin has made great contributions to our boarding kennel and has been promoted to the role of Veterinary Assistant. She has also been one of our strongest advocates in the pursuit of our “Cat Friendly Practice” Certification with the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She is looking forward to continuing her journey of growth and development! Kaitlin shares her life with two cats, Waffles and Strudel. They are her world! When not at work, Kaitlin enjoys reading, writing, collecting cat-themed knickknacks, playing music, and practicing her cat whispering.

Brittany, Veterinary Assistant

Brittany began her journey at ANRVA in 2017. She has a B.S. in Public Health. After graduating college, Brittany was lucky enough to start working as a Veterinary Assistant, which had been a dream of hers for years. She has always valued the connection we all share with our pets, and she wanted to bet into the business of keeping all pets health and happy! Working at ANRVA her just that – and has provided tools to further her education in a wonderfully supportive environment. Brittany shares her life with two fur babies: her kitty, Obie and her Border Collie, Doc.

Shaun, Veterinary Assistant

Shaun joined ANRVA in 2018. Bringing with him previous experience as a Veterinary Assistant, Shaun also received a Certificate of Education from NC State University in Animal Medicine – Veterinary Assisting. He plans to return to NCSU to continue his education and pursue his goal of obtaining a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on Lab Animal/Research. Shaun enjoys working in the veterinary field to support the bond between people and their pets. He has seen the results and research backing the emotional benefits that result from having an animal in your life, and he is proud to say that he is part of a cause that ensures your best friend will be with you for as long as possible! Shaun currently shares his life with one fur baby, Jackson, who is an 8 year old Pomeranian/Husky mix. Previous fur/feather/scale babies ranged from Chinchillas to Lizards and everything in between. When not at work, you can find Shaun in any type of water on a sunny day, hiking, practicing karate, or singing.

Rachel, Veterinary Assistant

Jade, Veterinary Assistant & Team Lead – Pet Care

Jade joined the team at ANRVA in 2014. Bringing with her several years of experience in a shelter setting, she is one of our strongest advocates for Behavior Services and Low Stress approaches to visits. She loves helping families keep their fur babies happy and healthy! Jade feels that the staff here is AMAZING and cannot imagine working anywhere else. She shares her home with 2 dogs (Link and Cayde), 1 cat (George) and 1 rabbit (Monty), who are her world! Jade’s hobbies include reading, playing video games, and sleeping.

Joshua, Pet Care Specialist

Joshua joined ANRVA in 2017. He will be graduating in the spring of 2018 with a B.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University – with a focus on environmental and evolutionary aspects. Joshua currently works at ANRVA to broaden his understanding of the traditional veterinary medicine field. He hopes to apply the skills learned here to a future career pertaining to Wildlife Management and Conservation.

Shelby, Pet Care Specialist

Shelby began working at ANRVA in 2017. She is currently working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Biology. Shelby joined the ANRVA team to expand her knowledge of animals and to grow in the animal care field. She feels that the work environment here is incredible, with the most supportive team that is always showing their compassion and love for animals. Shelby has three dogs of her own, and is regularly training them in obedience, fun tricks, and simple agility. She also likes to spend time on sunny days out on the trails hiking or kayaking with her pups!

Wesley, Pet Care Specialist

Wesley joined the ANRVA team in 2018. She has a degree in Wildlife Biology with a concentration in Wildlife Rehabilitation. Wesley has a passion for improving the quality of life of animals, great and small. ANRVA has given her the opportunity to expand her animal care experience after graduation. Not only does she play a nurturing role in daily animal care, but she enjoys doing so in a positive atmosphere. She feels lucky to have become a part of the team at ANRVA! Wesley has two dogs and one cat of her own. She feels reassured knowing that they will be taken care of here. In her free time, Wesley enjoys going on hikes, horseback riding, and playing fetch with her dogs.
