Appalachian New River Veterinary Associates is a well-established, full-service, small animal veterinary hospital providing comprehensive medical, surgical and dental care.

Dr. David Thompson and Dr Warren Moretz established Appalachian-New River Veterinary Associates in 1985. Dr. Thompson was in practice at New River Animal Hospital while Dr. Moretz was the owner of Appalachian Veterinary Hospital.. The doctors merged their practices and formed the present veterinary hospital.  Dr. Moretz has since moved to Mooresville, NC and started another practice. Dr. Thompson has remained in Boone and is the current managing veterinarian. The practice is currently exclusively small animal primarily giving care to dogs and cats.  Dr. Thompson provides care for some species of reptiles while Dr. Susan Mast provides additional care for "pocket pets" such as hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, ferrets, sugar gliders and prairie dogs. Dr. Randall McAdams interests are primarily in feline and canine medicine and surgery.                                                                                                                                                                                                 
We provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures through in-house testing and the use of external laboratories. We also work closely with local practices when special diagnostic procedures are required. The facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, in-hospital surgery suite, in-house x-ray capabilities, a closely supervised hospitalization area, and indoor boarding kennels with outdoor walking areas.
